I wanted to like this book. The story has a interesting premise. After reading the sample I decided to give it a shot, and now I regret it. Why are there so many positive reviews for this book? The only explanation I can come up with is the author has a lot of friends. Don't take on complex characters if you can't handle them. This story reads like a decent first draft, that is in desperate need of a content editor. Some areas of the book flow well, others feel rushed, and then there is tons of unnecessary filler\info dump. One unnecessary dump is smack dab in the middle of the major plot twist. Allison's character needs better development. She appears to be in love with the lead character without reason. Nat\ Requiem is extremely harsh with her criticism of how Allison\Emily decides to live her life. The author shows Allison hurt by this, but fails to show how she processes that hurt, and how she grows to have deep feelings for Nat. Instead Allison just appears to feel unworthy, thus enduring the criticism, and mindlessly loves Nat. Lola's character is over developed. Moore I feel doesn't even need to exist. Neither Lola or Moore really assist in clarifying why Nat, and Allison are who they are. Instead they just muddy the plot bogging it down. Requiem is a independent contractor who controls who her targets are. Then that plot line seems to just disappear. Lola apparently has always controlled who Requiem kills. Nat at one point just stops growing as a character and becomes stagnant. Repeating like a broken record "I can't love.",though she admits she loved Lola, and has shown herself capable of caring. This book had potential that is why I gave it two stars. It however is not even remotely worth the $9.99 I paid for it. If you are looking for a well written, ready for print, lesbian fiction do yourself a favor skip Requiem for Immortals. Delighted to have a thriller/mystery headed by a vaulted lesbian protagonist. It felt as though the author was telling me her story - from both characters' points of view, softly speaking into my ear. That is the degree to which I connected with her as a reader. She drew my sympathies and loyalties to both Natalya and Alison, rooting for and against each of them at various times for the benefit of the other. I loved how flawed these two women were, lending authenticity to their makeup. This book was so well written, I will go back to the beginning and re-read it to catch the many subtleties I missed the first time in my rush to keep up with narrative's unfolding. What a fantastic author Lee Winter is - a jewel for the genre.
