Ebook About New York, 1948After years of trying to break into New York City's literary scene, Madeline Slaughter is emotionally and physically exhausted. When a friend offers her a safe haven as the live-in companion to reclusive, bestselling novelist Victor Hallowell she jumps at the chance to escape the city. Madeline expects to find rest and quiet in the forests of Upstate New York. Instead, she finds Victor, handsome and intensely passionate, and Audrey Coffin, Victor's mysterious and beautiful neighbor. When Victor offers her a kiss and the promise of more Madeline allows herself to become entangled even as Audrey is also claiming her heart. The only problem is that Audrey and Victor are ex-lovers with plenty of baggage between them. As Madeline finds herself opening up and falling in love with both she starts to wonder, can there be a future for all three?Book The Companion Review :
One of the characters in the book makes the point that in fiction trans characters deserve to more than survive but be happy and triumphant. From that perspective I understand the value of this sweet low conflict story. All the characters are exhausted in some ways by the way the world has treated them, and their country houses are respite from the cruelties of the world which they can still never entirely forget - never even going into town.Unfortunately although I like the idea of these three people just living a life of deserved and fought for peace and quietude, for fiction to be enjoyable I feel like something more than that needs to happen. There’s a little bit of conflict around Victor and Audrey reconciling after their tense past, but in the main, nothing happens in this book. Absolutely nothing. It’s very short, so we basically meet Madeline, then suddenly she wants to have sex with both Victor and Audrey, then apparently months have gone by (although there’s no sense of the passing of time) and she loves them both. This reads more like a series of descriptive passages (albeit nice ones) to me than anything else. It made the whole story seem slow despite its brevity, and the lack of characterisation somehow made the relationships feel rushed. If you want to read some well done descriptive passages of life in country New York and some unrelated sex scenes, then by all means go for it. But I needed more of something. So, like many, I read this book on my kindle and my device opened it directly at chapter 1. I didn't see the note from the author at the beginning explaining that all 3 characters were trans which means I was confused for most of the book. I couldn't understand some of their conversations about "people like us", the danger they faced.... It's only halfway through it that I checked and saw the explanation which made things clearer. Also I didn't know the author at all (it was recommended on my main page) and due to the cover I didn't expect a sexy story. I thought it will only focus on the relationship since the story was so short. I'm not saying it was bad, just to keep in mind if you don't like to read sex scenes. For my part I was just surprised because the cover looked more old fashioned than the usual romance I know.Apart from the confusion on my part, the story was good and it was nice to see their relationship evolves in a healthy way. There's no big drama and it's a fast read. There was a bit too much scenes of them cooking for my taste though. I think it will have been ok in a longer novel but with only 122 pages I didn't have time to read about preserves and farm life. Also there were some editing errors (for example "you're book" page 96 I think)I still rate it 5 stars because I don't like to rate down books, and especially less known authors.
